The Argus Panoramic Night Vision Goggle puts four image intensifier tubes in front of your eyes instead of two. The two centre tubes give you depth perception, the two outer tubes fill in the sides, and together they open the view to roughly 100 degrees. A regular binocular gives you about 40, so you stop turning your head to see what is next to you.
The tubes are NNVT7 white phosphor and autogated. White phosphor shows the night in black and white instead of green, which is easier on the eyes over a long night, and the autogate keeps the picture usable the moment someone puts a light on.
It runs on four AA batteries in a battery pack, lasts around 100 hours on a set, and is waterproof to two metres for thirty minutes.
Everything comes in a black hard case with foam cut-outs. Inside you find the goggle, a helmet mount in the same coyote tan as the goggle, the battery pack with its power cable, and four day filter caps that protect the tubes when you check the goggle in daylight. An Allen key for the mount is included as well.

Image tubes
The figure of merit is the resolution of a tube multiplied by its signal to noise ratio, and it is the number that tells you how much a tube actually shows you at night. Resolution is the detail you can pick out, signal to noise is how clean that detail stays when there is almost no light left to work with, and on a goggle this size it is the second one you notice at three in the morning.
An NNVT7 resolves around 68 line pairs per millimetre, so the figure of merit on your goggle comes down to the signal to noise ratio of the four tubes that went into it. Every tube is measured on its own before it is fitted and your goggle ships with the test sheet of each one, so you can read exactly what you bought instead of taking our word for it.
